On
May 20 2010, a brainstorming session was
organized by ERRA and UNICEF at Embassy Lodge,
Islamabad to formulate an effective Water
Quality Surveillance and Management System for
Government Line Agencies in the earthquake
affected areas (EQAAs). The session was
organized in connection with ERRA’s Water
Quality Improvement and Promotion of Hygiene
(WAQIPH) Project.
DG WatSan ERRA, Syed Zaheer Hussain Gardezi
chaired the Session which was attended by
representatives of Local Government and Rural
Development Department (LGRDD) Government of
AJ&K, Public Health Engineering Department
(PHED) AJ&K, LGRDD KPK, PHED KPK, World Health
Organization (WHO), Ministry of Environment,
Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources
(PCRWR), LGRDD AJ&K, and the media.
The Session was a purely a technical discussion
and its purpose was to
• Develop recommendations for a sustainable and
comprehensive water quality management and
surveillance system in AJ&K and KPK to ensure
provision of safe drinking water to all, and to
reduce incidence of water borne diseases.
• Prepare detailed estimates for establishment
and operation of water quality labs in AJ&K and
KPK to develop a water quality surveillance
system.
The working of this technical Session was shared
with the governments of AJ&K and KPK in a round
table conference on the 27th of May 2010 at
Bhurban to ensure the commitment of governments
towards the establishment of a long term,
sustainable plan for water quality surveillance
and monitoring. |
