An Exit Strategy for WatSan

Since October 24, 2005, WatSan, ERRA, has been working to rehabilitate and reconstruct water supply schemes and sanitation facilities in AJ&K and KPK. Its interventions in the earthquake affected areas have been very successful in terms of coverage and utility. WatSan is now in the process of winding up its projects in the earthquake affected areas of KPK.

On 22nd September, 2010, DG-WatSan, Syed Zaheer Hussain Gardezi chaired a meeting at the ERRA Headquarters in Islamabad, to develop an exit strategy for WatSan, in consultation with the Program Managers of District Reconstruction Units, Shangla, Abbotabad, Kohistan and Battagram; and Representatives of Line Agencies, such as the Public Health Engineering Department and Tehsil Municipal Authorities. The target date of completion for all projects was 30th September, 2010. However, due to a financial crunch at the Government level, there was a delay. Below is a progress update.

Progress Update: WatSan, KPK

Following the availability of funds, the remaining projects will be completed and formal, handing-over ceremonies will be held before 20th October, 2010.
